Ah, February. The month of hearts, flowers, and getting away with not being a good partner all year round. Valentine’s Day is just a load of commercial garbage - it’s a day when people rush to buy cards, chocolates, and love tokens that really don’t mean anything if you’re not showing love the other 364 days of the year. Wow cynical much 😂 There is a reason I’m talking about this (I’m not just being a negative Nancy for no reason I swear) because while we’re on the topic of other unnecessary purchases, let’s talk about makeup. See how I’ve dragged it back??
Buying more doesn’t make you better (at makeup or in bed)
Here’s the thing: just like a Valentine’s card doesn’t equal love, buying more makeup doesn’t make you a better artist. I see it all the time, people with drawers (or cabinets) full of palettes, brushes, and products they don’t know how to use. And the worst part? They think that buying more is the solution to not feeling good enough.
It’s not.
Makeup isn’t about how much you own. It’s about how you use it. The basics can take you so far if you just learn to work with them. One good eyeshadow palette, a couple of brushes, and some time practicing will teach you more than every new release on the market. You don’t need every shade of foundation or a lipstick collection to rival a department store. What you need is confidence, creativity, and a willingness to make mistakes (and clean them up).
Why less Is actually more
When you stop chasing the next new product and start focusing on your skills, you’ll see just how far you can go. Practice blending, shaping and creativity - be bold or be minimalist.. The truth is, the makeup industry thrives on making you feel like you’re not enough without the latest thing. But let me tell you: you are enough. More products won’t fix bad blending, and the perfect brush set won’t magically make you Picasso. You’ve got to put in the work.
A love letter to simplicity
Skip the flashy gestures and unnecessary buys. Whether it’s makeup or relationships, the best things come from effort, honesty and showing up consistently. Stop thinking more equals better. It doesn’t.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your makeup stash or stuck in a rut, maybe it’s time for a clear-out or a back-to-basics session. Strip it down to the essentials and focus on what you can create with what you already have. I promise you’ll surprise yourself.
Invest in learning
We’re always so fast to try and heal by buying more but never under estimate the power of knowledge. Whether you watch a new tutorial or get a lesson from a pro (oh hey I do that by the way) investing in knowledge is a surefire way to save your bank balance in the long run.
I’ll leave you with this friends
Cards don’t equal more love. More makeup doesn’t equal more skill. And Valentine’s Day? Well, let’s just agree it’s overhyped. What really matters is how you show up for the people you care about and for yourself. In art, in makeup and in life it’s the thought, the effort, and the practice that count. Obviously if you want to gift the people you love then please do but shop small and local, support the people who deserve your hard earned money.
Think I’m chatting shit then please feel free to get in touch and let me know - equally if you enjoyed this blog I’d love to hear it!
